At one time the Czech cultural and social centre known as the National Centre, the theatre is a one-storey building dating from 1892-94 (designed by Josef Srb) which incorporates a mixture of Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque styles. In 1976 there was a fire, and in 1986 reconstruction and extension work was finished (by the architect Ivo Klimeš, with an interior designed by the architect Radim Ulmann).
